Since 1974 the Hole in the Wall is one of Austin’s most legendary entertainment venues.

The Hole in the Wall has remained the Austin music scene’s go-to club for generations of beginner bands, established touring acts, and famous rock stars to throw back a few, have a laugh with the locals.

Local success stories Spoon, The Gourds, Shakey Graves, Timbuk 3, Bob Schneider, Fastball, Black Joe Lewis & Gary Clark Jr have all gone on to wider acclaim after honing their chops on the cozy stage in the front window of the Hole. Touring acts like Old 97s, Mother Hips, John Doe and Jonathan Richman have graced the larger, more professionally-equipped stage in the middle of the venue.

Located on Guadalupe, in the heart of UT’s West Campus, the Hole in the Wall is a big part of the the history of “the Drag”.

Fun place to play music, and love the vibe. You could spend hours looking at the graffiti and art throughout this one of a kind bar. Drinks are fabulous and friendly staff. If you want to hear good music, and hang with some cool locals, this is the place!

Had my first visit on a Sunday night and did not disappoint ! Wasn’t too crowded for a Sunday but was still lively. Sunday night was karaoke night, was so much fun you should go check it out. The headliner that night was good too!! There was two bar areas available to visit but both bartender were excellent and kind! Can’t believe it had taken me this long to visit this local gem!

This is a really awesome venue. I went to go see one of my hair clients,Gus kelly,who i’ve been following for a long time and i think is amazingly talented. I mean I drove all away from san antonio and I got there halfway through a couple songs but I still felt it was a good experience. Sound system and acoustics seemed really good, i mean im not a sound and lights guy but they were far better tha almost any dive ive been to. The place was spacious and pretty comfortable. I like a place I feel like I can kind of lounge around and linger at this place felt like that. I found a pool table which I’m all about.I love arcade games where I’m out.Because that way , I don’t have to talk to any creeper , guys who wanna bug me. And it looked like there was another more loungy bar area in the back behind the pool table. All the employees I spoke to seemed , cool and down to earth. I’d love to go and hope it doesn’t change.

My husband and I visited here during a Christmas Pop-Up. It was crowded! They had a fun Christmas band and everyone was having a great time. They had clean bathrooms, quick service, and a fun atmosphere!

This legendary location is where many young UT freshman get their first alcoholic beverage some may prefer to refer to them as spirits when they come from this place. Back in my day, they didn’t seem to care much about IDs. I don’t know how they get the drinks today. But the first drink I ever had at this bar was something called a mind-eraser, which was recommended by the bartender. The enlightening beverage consists of a shot of Kahlúa and a shot of vodka combined. Since then, I’ve seen many great live music show and many a fantastic scene at this bar and live venue. The place is known for its very dirty men’s restroom. I think it has been mentioned plenty of times around these reviews and in movies or documentaries. It’s a lot of fun to see an upcoming musician play on the front stage with the street scenes and people walking by the large window. Also fun to see the medium bands in the backstage with a little more sound. While you’re there take a look at all the interesting street art on the walls at the hole.

Best damn bar in town. Truly the most magical live music experience anywhere ever. The place has more soul and grit than any joint in Austin. See a show on the front stage and be baptized by its infinite radness. If you are a musician and dont hang out there you are fucking up your life.

This place is grungy and dirty. And it’s a fun night out of you get off your high horse and make it about channeling your college self. I haven’t gone many times and it’s not on my top bar list. But each time I’ve gone, it’s always been one of “those nights.” The kind where you suddenly get together with an old friend and just say “yes” to the fun. “Yes to the fun” always brought us back here. And now, it’s got some Austin pop culture history with the opening sequence of The Tonight Show being filmed here. 3 bars in one.

What makes Hole in the Wall special is not the state of the bathrooms (rough) or the weird back-bar which you enter through a broken fire door, or that the drinks are a little expensive for a dive.

What’s special is that Hole in the Wall has the highest amount of character a dive bar can possibly attain. It has reached the peak.

The bartenders are (with one or two unpleasant exceptions) friendly. They all know how to make a cocktail (without any exceptions) and the food you can get at the back-bar is better than any bar food has a right to be.

If you don’t like dives, avoid it. But if you do, you can’t get much better.

So I ended up coming here on my 30th birthday in the hopes of meeting a tinder date for karaoke. Well, I got stood up, and still ended up having one of the best nights out solo I’ve ever had. There was a group sitting in the corner that sang German wwii propaganda songs, the KJ was singing hilarious bangers. Campbell, one of the bartenders, made my night. He served up drinks, cracked some jokes, showed some sympathy, sang some tunes, and just ended up making my night great. This is my new favorite karaoke spot, and I’m excited to start coming here on the regular.

Good dive bar. Always a live show going on during weekdays plus karaoke on weekends. Check in advance whos playing and if theres a cover.

The bar is pretty big and has 4 main areas. There are two bars in the front each with a stage. Then there is an outdoor patio and a bar in the back. The bars in the front have a better selection of drinks. The patio is the best place to have a conversation. Usually theyll have karaoke and a band going on simultaneously.

In terms of food, buffalo cauliflower and burgers are good. Its pretty standard bar food though. They have good week night specials in terms of drinks.

Some of the best live music in ATX!
If I lived here it would be my regular spot.
Great layout with two rooms.
Amazingly friendly staff who genuinely welcome you into their home that is Hope in the Wall!
Drinks are cheap and good. Awesome beer selection.
