For many long time Austinite’s Eeyore’s Birthday is both an eccentric Austin tradition and a celebration of spring. The final Saturday of April brings Austin it’s absolutely weirdest and longest running free festival.

Where: Pease Park
Omar Mousa, Austin based media producer & cinematographer, chronicles the essence of Eeyore’s and all of Austin’s charming weirdness in beautiful, captivating 1080p.
Because this hallmark of Austin weirdness is almost 60 years old, the makeup of it’s attendees is as eclectic as Austin itself. It’s family friendly, though some of the costumes are a bit risque, and it’s hippy centric, a particularity of it’s original roots.

In 1963, Lloyd W. Birdwell Jr. and other UT Austin students from the English Department, inspired by A. A. Milne’s caricature Eeyore, an always gloomy, pessimistic donkey who’s convinced everyone has forgotten his birthday, put together a spring picnic in Eeyore’s name. Austin’s hippie community immediately embraced the event, and the original Eastwoods Park picnic moved to Pease Park in 1974.

The festival includes games, live music, face painting, contents, costumes of all sorts and Eeyore’s longest tradition….drum circles (and plenty of them). There’s always a maypole and a less gloomy volunteer Eeyore donkey stand-in. Booths provide food, drink, Eeyore swag, past birthday memorabilia and countless other goodies.

If you’re driving (which we don’t suggest) go early. There’s a free shuttle that picks up at W. 16th and Colorado and Pease Park is accessible via the Shoal Creek Hike & Bike Trail for two wheel access.

Come with cash or credit cards as you cam’t bring your own food or drinks. Blankets, sunscreen and umbrellas/hats are recommended if you are spending the day. And oh yes, bring an instrument, even if you play badly. One of the many aforementioned drum circles are welcoming and encouraging.
