Raised in the Texas Hill Country, Downing began writing songs at a young age and released his debut album, Storyteller, while still in high school.
His authentic songwriting and engaging live performances have led to appearances alongside respected Texas artists including Gary P. Nunn, Sunny Sweeney, Slaid Cleaves, Susan Gibson, and Adam Carroll.
