The Texas Music Museum is thrilled to announce a special talk and performance featuring John Lomax III, renowned journalist, book author, and music manager known for his work with iconic and influential musicians such as Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and The Cactus Brothers. Grandson and nephew of folklorists John Avery and Alan Lomax, John Lomax III returns to Austin for his first local show in eighteen months. The event will take place at the Texas Music Museum, where he will be joined by Austin singer-songwriter Bianca De Leon.

Lomax III will treat the audience to a preview of songs from his highly anticipated debut album, American Folk Songs, scheduled for release on his 80th birthday, August 20.

The Lomax family has a deep-seated connection to Austin, starting in 1906 when his grandfather, John Avery, enrolled at the University of Texas. He went on to serve as Secretary of the University and established the Ex-Students Association. John Avery’s children were born in Austin and several pursued their education at UT, including John III, who holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. His Uncle, Alan, earned 2 Grammy Awards for his complete Library of Congress recordings with Jelly Roll Morton, a founder of jazz.

The Lomaxes have made significant contributions in each of the following musical genres: Bluegrass, Blues, Cajun/Zydeco,Caribbean/Calypso, Country, Folk, Gospel, Jazz, Rap, R&B, Rock/Pop, Western/Cowboy.

About 17,000 Lomax field recordings were made for the American Folk Archive at the Library of Congress.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness a performance by John Lomax III in the heart of Austin. Join us for an afternoon celebrating American folk music and the rich cultural heritage of Texas.
