  2. This is possibly my favorite place in the entirety of Austin. Not only is the artwork abundant, ever changing and fantastic, its also represents and embodies the spirit of old Austin and what we all love and want it to be. There is gorgeous high end fine art for statement pieces, as well as affordable finely crafted artisan work from local artists, Quirky, fun strange, exciting, upbeat, energizing… Ok, I have to admit that I am one of the artists, so I may be a bit biased, but when I go to drop off my own artwork, I’m locked in and mesmerized by the beauty of the work and the wonderfully friendly and outgoing staff. They are VERY good to their artists, work hard to represent them well and succeed at it. I challenge you not to LOVE it.

  3. This gallery was quite the pleasant surprise and a great delight. It is much larger than how it looks from the outside. If you’re on the fence about walking in, do it! As we entered we were greeted by a cute little black pug welcoming all of our lovin’. Love how it is setup. Spacious yet quaint and not overwhelming. You can see everything and not feel like you’ve had enough (if that makes sense). I appreciated the various art forms and gifts (paintings, photos, affirmation post-its, jewelry, natural soaps and lotions, etc.) at different price points. You can easily support the arts without breaking the bank here.

This gallery was a nice surprise for me. I ended up buying a nice birthday gift here that I am sure will be appreciated. The ladies who worked there were also oh, so kind which seemed to be the norm nearly everywhere in Austin we went. Thank you! I’d return.

  4. Super cute/unique art gallery and tourist trinket shop. If you’re looking from some awesome pieces to add to your home, or give as a gift I would look here. They have options in all price ranges but it IS an art gallery so be ready to spend for the nicer items.

  5. This spot is happening. Friday night was an opening for 60+ artists and they were represented well. Every piece of art showed very well. Go on an opening night for the fun and energy, then go back at a less busy time to enjoy the art and gifts for sale, jewelry, crafts, sculpture, hand made gifts for everyone on your buy list, and more. Enjoy!

  6. Up there for favorite galleries! When we visited, there were two exhibitions, a few handfuls of original pieces on the walls, and lots of prints. You’re bound to find something you like from a local Austin artist. It was through Art for the People that I discovered Robots in Rowboats – and consequently bought a few prints from her Etsy to ship to friends.

  7. One of my favorite galleries! Stopped by when checking out the Austin mural across the street. The gallery is bright and open wigs. Wide variety of items for sale, originals, prints, earrings/jewelry and others. All of the items were so cute I had a hard time resisting buying everything. This is a great place to get some funky and unique presents.

The curator of this gallery clearly has a great eye and the man that was working was very helpful and kind. He gave us background on some pieces we were interested in and even offered some water!

  8. Wonderful little gallery! Full of amazing pieces by a bunch of local artists. We were greeted and offered water as soon as we walked in, and there is a range of prices for all the artwork so even if you didn’t have a lot of money on you, you could still grab a little something from there. There is also an adorable, tiny dog that waddles around the store, so that’s a plus.

  9. Art for the People is one of the best boutique art galleries I’ve ever been to. It’s inside of the most gorgeous/cute/artistic/chic historic home that I’m sure was completely renovated by the owner and turned into a gallery. Such wonderful vibes. It’s conveniently located near many other great shops and restaurants as well – even iconic ‘Greetings from Austin’ wall is across the street for any obligatory photos you may want/need.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owner Deanna Serra who is so friendly, personable, and inviting. It felt like I was talking to an old friend. She’s incredibly knowledgeable of all of the art within the gallery, as well as about local Austin art/artists in the scene. We were also greeted by the 2 cutest pugs I’ve ever seen. They sit on their little chairs at the front of the gallery and greet guests with hugs and kisses as you come in. Most, if not all, of the art is local and absolutely stunning. My girlfriend bought a piece and they completely wrapped up the sculpture in tissues paper and boxed it up for her. What an absolutely lovely place, curated and ran with true love and care. The business deserves all the success in the world. Definitely a place to check out if you’re in the Austin, Texas area!

  10. The owner and her entire staff are phenomenal! I can’t wait to visit Art For the People again, from art to gifts to jewelry, they are a Austin destination hot spot in my book!

  11. I love art which you will find in abundance at this quirky Austin gallery. I struggle to find gifts for my friends that are unique and interesting. Art for the People is the gallery where you will find wonderful art for your home for your friends and for you. Every time I go to Art for the People I find something new that is unique to Austin’s special flavor.

    Pros:
    – Austin artists one of a kind creations
    – Unique handmade gifts for your friends
    – Wonderful staff
    – Plenty of parking in the back

    Cons:
    – You have to find it on South First
    – I wish they were open later on week nights

You can’t miss with this gallery. Every visit is a fascinating experience.

  12. I checked out Art for the People for the first time this weekend, and how awesome! It’s a little place, but packed with local talent! It’s great seeing places that support the creative and handmade business owners in our city! This gallery has fine art on display and artisan goods for sale, like jewelry, handbags and notecards. The people there are so kind and welcoming, true art lovers themselves! South 1st has a lot of fun spots to hit, but this is a don’t miss!

  13. Here is the first line of Art for the People mission statement: “Art for the People is a gallery and workshop whose purpose is use the arts to help change lives for the better.”

Art for the People is a small art gallery in a quant house that was formerly a tattoo studio off of south 1st street. They provide a space for all artists to showcase and sell their artwork. A percent of their sales go back to the community via donations to organizations that support a cause. They are most passionate about ending homelessness. Their efforts include the Mobile Arts and Wishes program & they support the Mobile Loaves and Fishes Community First Village. In addition to displaying and selling art the space is used for events, classes and the 1750 square foot building is available for event rental.

I recently attended a class from Austin Learnshop at Art for the People and found the gallery to be gorgeous. The Artisan Market has the greatest gifts created by local artists. They were able to fit the 30+ attendees up with seating and tables. Their set up allowed for a small bar to serve wine and a spread of fruit, crackers and cheese. From the perspective of taking a class here I thought it was perfect for a small group.

The best part is Art for the People is they are next door neighbors to Dulce Neve which is a must stop before or after a visit to this local art gallery.
