Chupa was our first stop in Austin. We dropped our bags at the hotel and hoofed it up to 6th St. Here we had some pretty decent bar fare. I had the Chupacabra taco. Pretty tasty. Good selection of beers on tap and an excellent view of the side show that is 6th Street. It was too early for a lot of Austinites, so we pretty had the place to ourselves.
However, maybe the best part of this place was Amanda our server. Since she wasn’t terribly busy we had a great opportunity to get some tips from her on where to visit while in Austin.
This place gets 4 stars because the food was better than average and the service was great.

This is the only place that i will frequent on sixth street. The staff is awesome, the music is always on point, the drinks are great, prices fair and I always have a good time. If you’re looking to start your night off right or finish with a bang you must stop into Chupacabra! Whether it’s Austin, Matt, Johnathan, Nate or Eric behind the bar they are always sure you’re treated great. Chupacabra is the place to be any day of the week, I love it here!

Cool little bar atmosphere. Staff is nice and the ambiance is pretty cool.
I had the steak taco’s and thought they were de-lish! My wife & daughter had other types of tacos and enjoyed them equally as well.
There are lots of food options here on 6th Street & this one isn’t bad at all.

A very pleasant surprise . The food was delicious, the drinks were strong and the music was awesome!
I HIGHLY suggest the pulled pork queso & the Baja fish tacos with corn & flower hybrid tortillas and a side of green chile rice! All kinds of noms!

As a tourist visiting Austin for the first time, I figured we’d have to head over to Sixth Street at some point. It’s famous, right? Walking past the Driskill Hotel, I quickly realized that I’m too old for this shit. It looked like Bourbon Street, but with more homeless people and cynicism.

Anyway, the lady and I did a loop down one side and up the other, and then decided if we were going to find someplace serving lunch that didn’t have a shady-looking dude standing outside smoking (seriously–all the smokers in Austin are on Sixth Street), it was going to have to be in a different neighborhood.

But it was also cold and windy, and we were tired and on foot. So we doubled back and ducked into the Chupacabra, and it turned out to be the best food I had in Austin. It’s just a sports bar, but the food is seriously tasty. The brisket taco haunted every subsequent meal I had while in Texas. The fried chicken taco was also good, but I should have eaten it first. The sides I ordered were unnecessary because the tacos were quite large. I also enjoyed the local brew they had on tap, though I can’t remember what it was. Service was good, although we also hit them at a slow time.
