Güero’s Taco Bar, great South Congress Mexican food, features interior Mexican food with a hint of Tex-Mex. Everything from handmade corn tortillas & Mole to authentic Tacos al Pastor. Don’t worry if there’s a wait, you can enjoy live music, full bar and appetizers in our Oak Garden.

With over 30 years in Austin, Güero’s Taco Bar is the perfect meeting spot for friends and family. So drop by and let them do what we do best. The staff at Güero’s is friendly, eclectic and dedicated to Güero’s long-term commitment to service. Thanks for coming by!

Güero’s Taco Bar is a vibrant part of South Congress (SOCO), where the locals flock for hand-shaken margaritas made in the original way with fresh-squeezed lime juice. ¡Muy peligroso! Just about any Mexican beer you name can be served up icy cold. The bar will remind you of the great old cantinas you have visited in Mexico.

  1. We were starving when we sat down and promptly stuffed ourselves silly with chips and queso/guacamole/salsa from the salsa bar. And then we ordered more food! Tacos, migas, and enchiladas were all good, but the chips and dips were definitely a highlight. Would highly recommend a stop at Guero’s if you’re in the SoCo area.

  3. Incredible food. Sat outside but inside is huge. Really enjoyed the experience. If you visit Austin try it.

  4. This review is for the outdoor seating with live music on Saturdays.

The outdoor section does not open until 2 but we got here early to secure some seating. I would highly recommend the same as we were not the only ones with the same idea but were lucky to snag some tables in the back by the alley. Once we had our seating secured we jumped in line which was already getting long. The kitchen is a little hut with a chip and sauce station in front of it.

I ordered the tacos al pastor, chicken tacos, meat tamale, and black bean tamale. I will agree with pretty much everyone and say that the pastor tacos are way better than the chicken. The pastor are very flavorful and moist while I found the chicken to be a little dry. You can sauce the tacos up however you like and some cilantro and hot sauce definitely gave both some nice flavor. Both tamales were pretty good and I’d recommend.

Cocktails were surprisingly cheap but you have to stand in a separate line than the food to get them.

Overall with the live music playing this is a very cool spot to spend the day chomping on some tacos and drinking it up. If you bring kids I would say bring them earlier vs later. It gets VERY packed and rowdy later in the day but it is definitely a great time.

  5. I really don’t know how you can come to Austin and not eat at Guero’s. Number one thing is you must go to South Congress to get a true Austin vibe. The shops and people are so fun! The restaurant serves amazing Mexican food! It never disappoints! The have several different sauces to dip your chips in, but offer so much more. I love the fajitas, tacos and cheese enchiladas. It is worth the wait!

  6. This was my first visit to this Austin staple in food and they did not disappoint!! I had the taco plate, which included 2 tacos with that was generously stuffed with the meat of your choice. I chose brisket and grilled pork…both perfectly seasoned and cooked. The only drawback was that Guero’s doesn’t offer Mexican Coke. Otherwise, delicious food served I in generous portions…definitely worth a return visit

  7. I was happy to stroll upon this place in SOCO while in Austin. They had a Gluten Free Menu. Quest was good not fabulous but good. Tacos were the same. Texas has lots of good Mexican Food options. But not all of them offer easy to navigate gluten free options.

  8. So good. So yummy. I’ve been here many times. This time, with my daughter. She wanted a taco and tequila. We each ordered one pastor because they put pineapple. Yum! And a few tequilas with our basket of chips and we were happy! We sat at the bar which is full service menu too. Güero’s has a huge outdoor seating area where bands play and give a nice beer garden feel. I it here

  9. We stopped in for a cool, refreshing (alcoholic) beverage, and a chance to sit and listen to some live music. The bar wasn’t super packed when we arrived, so we were able to order and pay for our two margaritas (one frozen, one over ice) and mosey into the open space to find a table. We got lucky in that regard, as there was a small table close to the stage.

The band that day was a trio – one guitarist, one bassist and one drummer. I never heard them say their band name, but we did like them…and so did the assembled crowd!

People were up dancing – women, men, children. The guitarist/singer had a great voice – he almost had a 50’s vibe to it – and the bass player knew how to work the crowd, going out and picking up his massive instrument, throwing it over his shoulder while still playing.

We did take advantage of their chips and salsa bar, to help soak up some of the booze in the margarita (that bartender did not play around!), but didn’t partake in any of the food from the restaurant.

  10. Didn’t eat any tacos, per se, but really dug the beer garden and the amazing blues band they had playing on a Saturday night! Austin is such a vibrant, fun city, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that the drinks are much, much more affordable than in Chicago. Margaritas and other cocktails for under $8, beers under $6, the pretty girls, and amazing blues music will always keep me coming back.

  11. Yummy! They marinate the chicken al carbon overnight in orange juice to give it extra flavor! First meal in Austin…. can’t say I’m disappointed. So far, so bueno! Having a sangria with my meal…. it could use a little more fruit in it. It isn’t as sweet as I like it usually. All in all, great experience! The servers brought that sweet southern hospitality to their service. I feel very welcomed and at home 🙂 pricing isn’t so bad either. On your own, you can swing a generously portioned meal and a drink for $20! Doesn’t suck *thumbs up*

  12. This place is AMAZING! I came to Austin for a day trip and knew of this place from the movie Chef. I was not disappointed. The tacos were legit out of this world. Great, friendly service and I loved the decor and atmosphere.

  13. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this place. The staff was fabulous! The scenery and location was perfect. I enjoy the sangria/mimosa cocktail. The homemade salsas were delicious, and then of course my enchilada was incredible. Will definitely be coming back to visit!

  14. Fantastic Tex Mex fare in SoCo. Build your own enchiladas and tacos. Solid no frills margaritas.

Pregame at the Oak Garden. Good spot for catching some live music outside whilst sipping on local brews.

  15. I didn’t get to try much of their food, I went for a drink while enjoying the music on the patio, thanks god I decided to get a taco: so far, best pastor taco I ever tried

  16. What a great taste of local flavor! My friend and I were so drawn to the beer garden/ outdoor patio area that we didn’t even notice the main restaurant until we were leaving. We sat outside and enjoyed some live music, helped ourselves to some FREE chips and salsa(!), and bought some drinks. Despite the hot day and the size of the Friday evening crowd, it was nice and cool under the canopy of trees. After enjoying the atmosphere for a bit, I went up to the window to order a taco. I got the chicken al carbon, and it was absolutely delicious. The tortilla had clearly been freshly made, and the man behind the window threw the chicken and tortilla on the grill right in front of me to get it sizzling. Not only did it taste great, but it only cost $2.50! I really wish I had been hungrier because I would have liked to try some of the other taco options, which all looked super yummy.

  17. Gueros Taco Bar should be called Gueritos Taco Heaven, the tacos here are so delicious.

We came in here in need of “real tacos” and we found them. I understand that the beauty of food is that it is never stagnant but Gueros tacos was just what I needed.

This is a taqueria that serves drinks if what you are looking for is white glove, service consider going to the Four Seasons, a trip to Gueros is for tacos, is for taco lovers. Mexican food at it’s best.

There is a tortillera in the back making tortillas next to the salsa bar. The salsa bar has a few choices, green which is good for the pork tacos, red which is good for the beef tacos, and pico de gallo which is good for everything.

I personally enjoy the smaller tortilla tacos, same masa just different size. One of the happy surprises at Gueros is the rice. The rice took me back to myAbuelita’s house, it was so good and it tasted like abuelas rice I almost cried, seriously, I’m about to cry right now just thinking about it.

    Our waitress was fantastic.

If you are in Austin and you need a break from BBQ or just want to have some real tacos, come to Gueros, I wish I would have tried the MIGAS, migas are the TexMex version of chilaquiles, my other favorite Mexican dish.

  18. Didn’t have a taco, but did have a drink and got to enjoy the live Saturday night music. This place is cool- open air seating on benches and a stage at the front.

The music was family friendly and there were groups of all ages in attendance. The music was great, we just wished they’d played longer (it ended at 9 pm).

  19. Very good food, drinks and service!
The complimentary chips and salsa are great. I ordered 2 solo tacos which are Steak Solo and Fish Solo, and they both taste very good. I also ordered Sangria and one of their signature margarita which is ‘The Don’, it tasted very smooth.
Definitely will come back next time I visit Austin!

  20. Great place to chill and hear some music on a Sunday afternoon. The band today is killing it. Guitar, guitar and more guitar. Drinks are cold and the food good. Keep music alive!

  21. I make the trip from north Austin to come here often. Sara is usually our waitress who is both awesome and delightful. Love the food and the atmosphere. Guerros has a loyal customer for life.

  22. Fresh variety of salsas with chips were delivered to our table when we sat. They ran out of the special (chicken tamales) so we ordered the chicken enchilada and fish tacos which were amazing, as was the guacamole!!
Cute, funky restaurant and a nice patio for people watching. Will go back for a margarita!

  23. I’ve been to Gueros a few time and was not overly impressed. My recent visit changed my mind.

We arrive on a Thursday afternoon in time for the last hour of happy hour. Drink prices are very good: $4 margaritas that seriously rock, $2 domestics and $2.50 imports.

Our server was on the spot and kept our drinks full, we were pleased and getting a buzz.

The queso was yummy and the salsa was what it needed to be. We tried some authentic al pastor tacos at $2 each. They are just a snack but nice flavor.

Next was beef fajitas for two. The meat was tender and tasty but not flame charred like I prefer. The peppers and onions were cooked just right. The charro beans were excellent with a bit of chew the way I like them. We barely finished it.

Great drink specials, super service and good food will bring me back again and again.
