  1. Hard to find a whiskey bar with a jazz vibe then also one that will actually play a jazz band. The bartenders I would venture to say at mixologists that, my wife not even liking whiskey, found a way to make her something she now loves through her describing her taste preferences. Their staple is the old fashioned but that’s a good judge of any whiskey bar: that this one passes the test.

  2. Best whiskey selection on earth! And cigar friendly patio in back connected to mezcaleria that serves amazing Mexican cocktails! Wow! Just Wow! Go here now!

  3. Came on new years eve for a pre dinner drink and loved it. Huge and beautiful whiskey selection, friendly bartenders who work quickly and know their stuff, fun atmosphere.

I was able to take advantage of a pre 8pm happy hour with $6.50 drinks. Got the draft old fashioned and gold rush. Both were great – well balanced, quality ingredients. I would be fine paying $12-15 so the happy hour price was amazing.

  4. From the entrance to the back patio, this is one amazing spot! The entrance is setup whereas on the left is Seven Grand on the right is Las Perlas (a mezcal bar). After having our ID, we headed to the left to see what Seven Grand had to offer. To my surprise, upon entering we encountered one of the longest bars I have ever seen. As for the bar, while they have other things, it was primarily stocked with whiskey. On the opposite side of the bar was seating (tables/chairs), a few pool tables along with an area where a small band was playing.

We quickly found a spot at the bar where we placed our drink order before making our way to the seating area. In addition to the seating area, there are plenty of seats at the bar which seemed to be a very popular place to hang out. The bartenders were very knowledgeable and attentive; one friend was unsure what to order so they suggested a beverage, crafted and served it to her. She was super happy with the drink and ordered it a second time.

After being inside for a while, a few of us made our way to the back patio which is very spacious. While we did not order anything, there is food available on the patio. The patio is shared with the Las Perlas (the mezcal bar) that is connected so we walked into it for a few minutes to check out the scene before returning to Seven Grand.

Overall, Seven Grand is an interesting but fun spot. Based on appearance, it seems like it wants to be more of speakeasy as the lighting is low which goes well with all the dark wood throughout the space. The fact that it has pool tables gives it more of a bar feel. Either way, I am a fan as I had a great time and enjoyed several tasty adult beverages. I will return the next time I am in Austin.

  5. Parking sucks but hey it’s down town. The vibe is really old town Irish feel. I like it. Plenty of seating and I’m a huge fan of pool tables and they have 3 of them. Small stage in the back allows for intimate concerts. Area in the back gives you fresh air unless you are by a smoker. They also have a good food stand in the back with some bomb tacos. Tacos and liquor grrrreat combo. If you love whiskey then stop by and check it out.

  6. What a selection of bourbon. Got to try Bookers Rye. Best pour I have ever had. If you want to try that special bourbon you can’t find, try here. Might be pricey, but you can check it off the list. The bartenders made me feel at home and very helpful picking a pour.

  7. Currently sitting at the bar and WOW. I am a big whiskey fan and I was recommended this bar. Just had a whiskey sour with the angels envy port finish and it may be the best whiskey drink I have had yet. Well made sour, and great choice. I am a big port finish fan (had it with the breckinridge) and asked for a recommendation, did not disappoint. Boyfriend has been experimenting with scotch and was recommended the Laphroaig 10 year and he is currently sipping his first scotch *neat* very happily. Cannot recommend enough for first timers or someone more experienced looking to branch out.

  8. Old country Texas feel. Has pool tables and great variety of whiskey. Very low lit and great if your trying to take a date out for good conversation. The two drinks I tried were the Southpaw and Japanese Fly away

  9. What prompts me to write a review for any establishment is the drive and passion of the staff I interact with. The particular gentleman I interacted with made the experience that much more delightful. The ambiance was exactly what I wanted and the selection was superb.

  10. wesome venue with a very long bar! Located next to Las Perlas (awesome mezcal bar) and the two are connected via their patio out back!

All workers are fun and vibrant! Live music all the time and they allow you to get drinks from Las Perlas next door and bring it over if you’re not a whiskey drinker.

Try the tacos out back in the patio delish!
Extensive whiskey collection proudly displayed. Great vibes.

  11. Two words. Whiskey. Bar. If you’re ordering something other than whiskey here. . . I dunno what you’re doing then. Bartenders are very helpful – they’ll give you the lowdown on their house cocktails (all good) or on whiskeys from everywhere.

Do yourself a favor. Go out side the confines of the big production and dabble with some interesting stuff. You’ll be surprised. Drink it neat.

  12. Best bourbon selection in Austin! Great laid back atmosphere. Good prices. Crowd on a Thursday night is probably late 20’s to early 30’s. My husband and I are mid 40’s and felt completely comfortable with the non-rowdy, easy going crowd. The bartender, Emily, knows most people by their first name and is very bubbly, and clearly loves this bar. I like everything about this place and wish I had found it sooner in my visit! Excellent happy hour specials as well!

  13. I’ve become a tiny bourbon connoisseur while following my husband on his real bourbon connoisseur journey, so I have a grasp on what makes a whiskey bar stand out from hacks. We have over 250 bottles in our collection, so it takes a bit to impress me, but Seven Grand did not disappoint.

I was there only for a bit, because I was at a gathering at the bar next door, but it was enough to make an excellent impression on me. The wall of whiskeys behind the bar was abundant and well selected. It’s not in every bar that you see George T Stagg, Weller Antique 107 *and* 12 year, as well as Heaven Hill Bottled-in-bond, among many others. High marks all around from me.

The bartender was knowledgeable, and I got a Buffalo Trace flight, 3 1-oz pours for under $40, which was pretty good price (George T Stagg, Weller 107 and Stagg Jr). The whiskey speaks for itself.

The décor, lighting and overall atmosphere was great. It’s a bit weird the description on Google reviews is “masculine watering hole” because that would have seemed intimidating to me, but on the contrary, this place was accessible and solid. Make it a stop or become a regular!

  14. What a string of luck. I stumble upon tequila/mezcal heaven next door at Las Perlas and then get directed to the center of the whiskey universe here at Seven Grand by the bartender. Like its neighbor next door, the staff is very knowledgeable about their inventory and make some great drinks or straight pours, whatever you desire. Another worthy stop.

  15. My group and I had a great experience here. We came on a Thursday night after a wedding rehearsal. It wasn’t very crowded and exactly the vibe we were looking for. Emily, the bar back, took great care of our group.. actually she was much more attentive and friendly than the actual bartender. You can tell she has a passion for her craft. We were all visiting from out of town, but will definitely return if we were in the area.

  16. Any cocktail bar downtown that has happy hour 7 days a week until 8PM is going to grab my interest. And any bar that includes Manhattans on their cocktail happy hour menu for $6 is going to get me in the door! My husband and I went last night around 7:30. It was a Saturday and only one other couple in the bar (and a few people outside), most likely because it was early. It is off the beaten path, however, so I can see where they will rely on word of mouth rather than foot traffic. Thomas was our waiter, and very helpful and friendly. My husband ordered a Sazerac and later tried some of their scotch.
Very nice bar and love their happy hour selection.

  17. If you love whiskey, you’ve found heaven in Austin right here. 400+ offerings – check. Classic whiskey cocktails, done to perfection – check. Fancy bound “Whiskey Bibles” – check. Bartenders are knowledgeable, attentive and attractive (bonus!) – check. Classy interior with a “Wall of Wow!” bar – check. Interesting taxidermy – bonus. Ample bar seating, with purse hooks – double bonus. Pool tables – check.

  18. Amazing selection of whiskey, and reasonably priced cocktails nestled in the center of downtown. Grab a dram, play some pool, and learn about the back bar. An educated staff delivers great cocktails, or a perfect pour of an exclusive whiskey. Pushing whiskey culture forward in Austin one glass at a time.

  19. The bar is gorgeous. The whiskey, whisky and scotch collections are incredible and nothing I have seen in Austin. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. I have made some repeat visits already and found the service and cocktails to be consistent.

  20. We read about Seven Grand in Eater and finally got the chance to check it out this past Monday. First thing I will say is the interior gets it just right. It has the distinguished whiskey bar feeling, with lots of Mahogany, low lighting and nice little accents, like a large portrait of Johnny and June. The bar itself is one of the nicest in the city and feels as if it could have been in place since the 1800s.
Drinks are solid whiskey drinks with a never ending supply of the finest dark spirits. And every person who works here goes far out of their way to help with suggestions as well as to just generally shoot the shit, which is nice.
All in all, it has the trappings of a laid back, with just the right amount of sophisticated swank, watering hole to widdle away the hours.

  21. I distinctly remember my first time in Seven Grand, my expectations were low and I really had no idea what to expect (other than whiskey, of course). I was carded at the door and then walked into the lobby and was presented with a big wall of Jameson staring me in the face. What a first impression! It smelled like a proper whiskey bar… there’s a distinct lovely woodsy smell. And I love it. Because of all of this combined, makes you feel like you’re in another world and not anywhere near dirty 6th. 😉

So here’s the real reason I keep going back besides the whiskey happy hours (5-8pm!) and the awesome atmosphere… I go back because of my favorite bartender, Brita! She is one of the most amazing people I’ve met recently. If you need your day brightened, ask for her. She will not only bring a smile to your face, but she’s bubbly, thoughtful, attentive AND makes badass cocktails. She’s also super cute, so it’s hard to miss her.

Home is a warm inviting space, excellent whiskey cocktails and a side of Brita.

  22. The staff here is fantastic and extremely knowledgeable. They are always eager to give a suggestion — there are a million different types of whiskey, so it is helpful to have a guide — and the concoctions they come up with are on point. Brita is awesome and introduced me to Seven Grand’s Whiskey Society, which is a class that combines whiskey tasting with education and instruction. I also love the bar’s decor and the central location. Oh, and they have a great happy hour (seven days a week)! All around, great place and has become a new Austin staple for me.

  23. Seven Grand is a beautiful escape from the wild downtown Austin scene. It has a dark, sexy, cozy atmosphere with a library of hundreds of whisk(e)y expressions. The staff is well trained and very welcoming. Happy hour runs from 5-8 EVERY DAY of the week and the menu features a completely delicious selection of cocktails for only $5-$6. Classic cocktails are the main focus of their offerings (other than the 400+ whiskies on the wall). You do not have to spend a million bucks here to sip on brilliant whiskey and get educated on what’s in your glass. There are three gorgeous pool tables, a well-selected juke box, and a large patio for smoking cigars – which are also on the menu for excellent prices! Make sure you ask about their Whiskey Society program!

  24. If you’re looking to get away from 6th and enjoy a nice whiskey with a coworker, friend, family, or client then this is where you want to be. Amazing selection of whiskey and knowledgeable bartenders that make sure you’re taken care of. A selection of beers are on tap for those who arent ready to take the jump.

    Shana W. , 8 years ago
  25. Awesome bar with great collection of stuff that’s hard to find. Blantons, Michters, Pappy, you name it. I’ll be back.

  26. Sick of getting sloppy on sixth street? Stroll one block up and sip whisky like a gentleman. The interior is…well, let’s be polite and say it’s “spartan.” Three pool tables, a few sit-down tables, and a beautiful, beautiful bar. The entire space is dominated by 400+ bottles of whisky. Rye? They got it. Bourbon? Yup. Scotch? Of course. You absolutely won’t have a problem finding your favorite (or a few new ones) here.

We met up here on a random Wednesday and pretty much had the place to ourselves. Our bartender was attentive, though I suppose she pretty much had to be at that point. Pleasantly, Seven Grand is the farthest thing from pretentious. I suppose when you’re a block away from the homeless shelter, it’s kinda hard to be.

Their happy hour runs until 8pm (!) and has a decent selection of cocktails for $5. The Boubon Rose and Gentlemen’s Buck are both excellent happy hour choices. It’s entirely possible to have a good time for $20 + tip, which is refreshing for an upscale drinking joint in the heart of downtown. A word of caution though: if the cheap cocktails segue into their vast selection of aged whisky, your wallet can take a beating pretty quickly.

Protip: The sweet spot here is weekdays around 6pm. Street parking is free at that point, and you still have two hours left to enjoy happy hour.

As Austin’s culinary and libation scenes continue to evolve, Seven Grand is the type of place that makes me wish I lived just a little closer to downtown.
