The best of Austin live music. In the 1970′s, Austin TX’s Stubb’s restaurant became the heart of an explosive music scene.

Stubbs was ground zero for musicians like Joe Ely and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Other famous musicians who would “play for their supper” included Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Robert Cray, George Thorogood, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Linda Ronstadt and the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Although small in size, Stubb’s Restaurant was always filled with good friends, great music and plenty of Stubb’s Legendary Bar-B-Q. Come on down for some Live Music, Cold Beer and Great Food!

  1. Stubb’s Gospel brunch on Sundays is a must see, must experience. Even though the biscuits and sausage gravy are amazing, don’t fill up on them and leave room for the brisket and jalapeno sausage …

  2. The BBQ was pretty good. Our waiter was great! We were there at about 930 on a Froday, so no wait for dinner! There was a metal band playing in the basement but I wish we had been there for a concert at the amphitheater! The host however, was horrible. She was on her phone sitting at a table when we walked in, rolled her eyes at us when we asked for a table and walked away without giving us any menus or info. Our party of 12, most of whom have been servers or bartenders in the past almost walked out right then.

  3. I had always thought that the best Austin barbecue had to be sold from trucks or shacks, but Stubb’s has proven me wrong. This place is perfect if you want top tier barbecue in a more relaxed sit-down/bar environment. The brisket is pull-apart-tender and the pork ribs just fall off the bone.

Extra props for the side dishes as well. I’m on a keto (high fat, zero carb) diet so typical BBQ sides like coleslaw, potato salad, beans, etc. are off limits for me. Stubb’s has some amazing options for sides like cheese spinach, collard greens, and salad. This is going to be my go-to place from now on if I don’t feel like waiting 2 hours at Franklin’s or La Barbecue.

As a bonus, they also regularly host a lot of live music events. Makes for an awesome experience.

  4. All You Can Eat …. Great Deal at 23.99 per person:) I definitely would recommend the Beef Brisket and Pork Ribs … Amazing.  Not too keen on the Sausage and chicken.  The collard greens were also great and the sweet Mashed potatoes.  They have a live band that starts after 930 pm downstairs…I would definitely recommend going with an appetite.  They also have feature acts in a small amphitheater attached to the restaurant.

  5. What can I say?  Great food with HUGE portions.  I always clear off my plate, but this time, I failed…and I didn’t even go for the whole kitchen sink.  Live music is cool, but if you’re sitting at the bar, it’s going to be a conversation killer, but I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get seated quickly.  I’ve used Stubbs BBQ sauce for a couple of years and this place didn’t disappoint.  It’s not quite on the same level as the Salt Lick, but it’s a very good representation of southern BBQ.

  6. It’s been several days later and I’m still full. I knew I wanted to eat some famous Texas BBQ and didn’t feel like waiting in a line so we came to the next best place, Stubb’s. It was around lunchtime on a weekend and we didn’t have to wait at all. Good because I was starving and my mouth watering. I was optimistic and my boyfriend and I each ordered our own platter but we barely made a dent and could have easily shared. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were thick cut and a little on the hard side. But I didn’t mind because I don’t like my tomatoes mushy anyway. Alight now to the BBQ. I had the angus beef brisket, pork spare ribs, with mac & cheese and serrano cheese spinach. All plates come with a thick slice of texas bread but no one has room for that. The beef brisket had a nice char on some of the end bites which I loved, however somewhat dry. The pork spare ribs were so moist (because of that fat doe) and fall of the bone tender and delicious. I normally love beef BBQ but I am happy I also got the pork because the meats were so different and both worth trying. Mac and cheese was bomb and the serrano cheese spinach was surprisingly out of this world. It had a decent amount of heat but not enough to be unpleasant and ooey gooey it was. So savory and while not guilt free (because that cheese doe) it was worth every indulgent calorie. Stubb’s also has it’s own barbecue sauce. Which I tried but my meat really didn’t need any additional sauce or flavor. However I found a bottle of it that my roommate had so we can enjoy a little taste of Stubb’s anywhere we are.

  7. The pulled pork is awesome. House sausage is great. Brisket was a lil dry this morning but great flavor. Collard greens and fries were both good and the pickles were butt puckeringly sour. Yum! Must come back soon.

  8. Five star seems too low. Way too low. First time eating here and not disappointed at all. The drinks are huge. We ordered the Stubbs Major which has three meats and two sides. Brisket, pulled pork, and house sausage were our meats. Collard greens and fries were the sides.

Ok, you can read other reviews for the sides, it’s really all about the meat. From least best to best, cause they were all good:

Brisket- great flavor but just a tad dry. Still recommend it though. Sausage- great flavor. No complaints. Pulled Pork- maybe the best I’ve had that I didn’t smoke myself. So freakin good.

If you are in the area, you can’t skip this place. It was a cozy atmosphere inside and service was great.

  9. Pretty darn solid tourist bbq. I’m no Texas native, and I don’t purport to be any sort of expert, but I know tourist bbq when I see it.

It’s a restaurant, not a truck, or a pit. You’re not ordering by weight, you’re ordering entrees. But that’s not a knock, it’s just a style. Overall, it’s exactly what I want out of a bbq restaurant. While the staff was pretty slow, it was F1 weekend and there are a million and a half people in the restaurant and also waiting in the bar area (Including Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo himsel!) I was super content to just hang out with a beer and wait for the food to roll in. Once ordered, it showed up pretty quickly. Brisket was solid, the pulled pork was great, the ribs were weirdly amazing. They weren’t the meatiest but whatever dry rub they used was just amazing. Outside of that the sides are kind of average, but everything coalesces into this happy package that I was super, super satisfied with.

Top it off with the fact that it’s a music venue with a really awesome stage located below the bar, just off the end -as if the bar seating area is a balcony.

It’s really no fuss, no frills, but it’s totally a tasty and enjoyable place. If I’m ever back in Austin, while there are other bbq places I’d try first, I wouldn’t hesitate to come back here, and would still enjoy every minute of it!

  10. Good quality BBQ.  We had the chicken, the sausage, beef ribs, brisket, potato salad and the beans.

The chicken was probably my favorite of everything we had.  The sausage definitely seemed like a special in house recipe.  It was quite unique.  I must be honest though, it is not the BEST BBQ in Texas.  I would go back if given the chance, but probably not go out of the way for it.

We were at a special event, so everything was served buffet style, so I can’t judge the service or the wait staff.

The place was clean, and the staff that we did deal with (like at the bar) were extremely professional and courteous.

There was also a concert there that night and the music venue is outside. The sound seemed really good and from what I recall the concrete area for the audience seemed to be at just a slight incline, so this allowed people in the back to see over the heads of people in front of them.

I’d go back, just for the experience.

  11. I have been here plenty of times for shows but never have I eaten here! A friend was visiting from out of town, and she really wanted some BBQ late night so we came unassumingly with no reservations.

We actually ordered the exact same thing: platter with brisket with sides of mac-n-cheese and the serrano cheese spinach (like, wtf is that even?!). The food was GOOD. The brisket was so tender that I physically was not able to pick it up with my fork without it completely falling apart and then when I finally proceeded to get it in my mouth, it just melted away like butter. Can you imagine that?! I thought I was going to have a mediocre experience but even my friend who is a major foodie who lives, works, breathes in the industry loved it. The mac-n-cheese was almost gross, and I was so disappointed with it because it’s such a go-to item for me. However, the spinach was crazy good! Grateful that my server recommended it. It has a bit of a kick so it’s definitely not for the weak. I would definitely come here again!

  12. Gospel Brunch: Three stars for food but five stars for experience! We got prime seating in the basement, up front and personal with the band! I know my brother called in advance to reserve these seats, but there will still be a line out the door to get into the restaurant on Sunday AMs. It costs around $20/person and is all you can eat.

The music was awesome and the vocalists were definitely extremely talented! We loved the atmosphere with everyone around us seeming to feel the same excitement on a Sunday morning.

The food is served buffet style with a variety of different brunch items, from eggs to tamales and fruit to BBQ, there was definitely enough to fill your plates! There is even a well stocked Bloody Mary bar, but unfortunately I didn’t make it to this area. This definitely was not my favorite barbecue experience in Austin or my favorite food experience, but the live music and atmosphere still make it something I recommend at least once for anyone living in/visiting Austin!

  13. We went here for gospel brunch which is at 1030am and 1230 am every Sunday.  Be sure to have reservations which can get on their website.  I would also recommend paying more to sit closer to the stage!

The band was great and played many great gospel hits.  It was a very spiritual experience especially after a few bloody marys and mimosas.  The combination of great gospel music and great drinks convinced me that there was a higher power.  Can I get a witness?

The food is buffet style and then there is a carving station.  The food was decent but not exceptional.  It was ‘buffet good.’  but not ‘Vegas buffet good.’  Of note, there are vegetarian options if that is your thing.  I enjoyed the eggs.  The grits were tasty.  And oh the buttermilk biscuits…Yum.   But the pancakes were blah as were some other things.  But then again, you don’t come to gospel brunch for the food.  All in all I was very pleased.

The service was good and friendly.  No complaints there.

Be sure to walk around the venue and look at all the old concert posters.  This is quite awesome.

    Tips:
    1.  Get reservations.
    2. Get seats close to the stage.
    3. Drink a bloody mary!
