Top Notch is an Austin icon. Since 1971 it’s been an Austin mainstay for burgers, onion rings and more in a vintage setting with curbside service.

Top Notch was featured in Richard Linklater’s 1993 film, Dazed and Confused.

Top Notch delivers atmosphere as well as great food with it’s 60’s feel and car hop service. The #2 cheeseburger is still the best seller. For the more adventurous, the employees recommend the “Longhorn Special,” a double meat burger complete with Top Notch’s own special sauce. You can always call your order in at Top Notch.

  1. Hands down The best burgers in Austin. Bit pricey but if you like a char burger well worth it… occasionally anyway. I’d bet they would get a lot more customers if it came down a bit though. 😉

  2. I love Top Notch. Like the name, the service and food is always top notch. The longhorn burger special is my favorite with double patties and special sauce. The chargrilled style gives the burger a great smoky taste. The sweet potato fries are delicious dipped in ranch. It’s also cool that a scene from “Dazed and Confused” was filmed here. Top Notch is really an Austin treasure.

  3. Come for the burgers and stay for the fried pies. Flame grilled burgers made to order. What more could you want? How about fried chicken or shrimp. I’m always tempted but some how I come back to the burgers. A bit like stepping back in time. Especially as it is the same as when I was a kid.

  4. Delicious burgers and onion rings! Love the vintage look and feel of the building. And of course, its history in Dazed and Confused.

  5. This has been here for forever! If u have t stopped by here, you need to. It’s a must try. Very good! Also they have car shows every now and then. And that’s fun too

  6. Top Notch lives up to the name. It’s good food for great prices. I love the chicken fried steak sandwich! (Pro-tip: get cream gravy on the side with it). The burgers are good too, and the fries are good.
Also the whole novelty of the place is cool. Must visit especially for Dazed and Confused fans.

  7. Really really good old fashioned burgers and fries/onion rings! Aside from the burgers, everything else I’ve tried from their menu has been good.

And yes, a scene from Dazed and Confused was filmed here. So, if you haven’t eaten here, you’d be much cooler if you did!

  8. I found this place on Road Side America – a website that notes unusual landmarks – and decided that it was worth swinging by. We pulled into the drive in and got fries, onion rings and some drinks to eat at one of the picnic tables that are around.

The onion rings were totally top notch, while the fries and shake were totally average. The vibe of this place, even on a random weekday afternoon was really good. There’s lots of funny photo ops and unique details around the place. Would have loved to come in on a classic car and drive in movie night.
