Live Music: The Iguanas
The Iguanas have been flying the New Orleans flag since 1989, mixing Tex-Mex, Cajun, R&B, rock, blues, Caribbean rhythms, and Latin grooves into a sound that’s unmistakably their own.
Formed by Rod Hodges and anchored for decades by Joe Cabral, René Coman, and Doug Garrison, the band has never fit neatly into one genre—and that’s exactly the point.
Their songs bounce effortlessly between English and Spanish, pulling influences from the Gulf Coast, the Texas border, and the streets of New Orleans into one deep, infectious groove.
An Iguanas show feels like a neighborhood block party where every musical tradition gets an invitation.
One minute you’re hearing swampy R&B, the next it’s accordion-driven conjunto, then a blast of New Orleans funk or a Latin dance rhythm that fills the floor. They’ve been a staple at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for decades and remain one of the city’s most beloved live bands.
If you’re looking for polished roots music with plenty of soul, rhythm, and Crescent City attitude, The Iguanas always deliver.
