  1. Had a wonderful time at the speakeasy bar behind the bookshelf. Jordan is a very accommodating bartender and sweet because he let me try angostura bitters for the first time ever. Love the Harvey Wallbanger drink he mixed. Thanks for the great customer service Jordan!

  2. I had a really good experience staying here for 2 nights in the 8-person mixed room. The room and bathroom were both very clean, and people were as conversational or not as you would prefer. The front desk service was very receptive and willing to help with any issues. The showers could use some rehabbing but they were functionally good. I didn’t have any issue with the noise from downstairs and outside, nor from other people in the room — it was noticeable, but nothing that disrupted sleep or my life. Ample outlets were available, which was great.

  3. Loved this speak easy hidden bar. You have to go thru a bookcase to come out on the other side and inside it’s a hip little bar with fantastic cocktails. Would recommend!

  4. The staff is absolutely stellar, the location is unbeatable, but the amenities are a bit lacking. Everything is falling apart by a good bit. Janky showers, broken toilets, only 1 fan in the 8 bed room worked and it was hot as balls. Pretty dirty even for a hostel.

  5. Firehouse is the first hostel I have ever stayed at and I had a wonderful experience. Each staff member I spoke to was incredibly friendly and helpful. It’s right next to 6th street, so you can go check out all of the local bars. I was on the 3rd floor and did not have any issue with the noise at night, but I can’t speak for the other floors. Overall, it was a great place!

  6. This place was AMAZING. I met very cool people that love to travel and be social. My experience traveling alone in Austin would NOT have been the same. I ended up going to karaoke with my roommate and had a wonderful time. I highly recommend Ego’s. It’s like dive bar meets American Idol. The people there were insanely talented. Anyway the location, the kind staff, the cleanliness and the fact you can store and cook food in their communal kitchen make this hostel unbeatable. I will be back again and again.

  7. My first time ever staying in a hostel. I have heard many horror stories about them and I was skeptical coming in, but to my surprise I had the best trip to Austin, upon arrival I was greeted with a Lonestar beer and a nice smile from the front desk. For the majority of my trip I found myself hanging out with staff members and doing exciting things through out the days. Li LI was super fun and would take us out on the town at nights or go grab lunch with us. Sarah and Jarad were extremely insightful when it comes to places to go and see. On top of the great staff, all of travelers were friendly and made many new friends. Perfect for someone traveling on a budget in their 20s. All in all a very positive and entertaining experience. Thank you!

  9. Overall I had a great stay at this hostel. We stayed in a suite with a larger bed for 2 and a bunk bed for 2. The room was clean and the bathroom was huge!

Jared – the receptionist was fantastic. Very friendly and gave us all the information we needed as soon as we arrived. The owner of this hostel should give him a raise. He deserves it.

The location is probably the best part about this place. Literally steps away from 6th street where all the bars and restaurants are.

    Highly recommend!

  10. Matt is the Sh*t. He assess you before you sit down. Working security, I already knew I was buzzed but the moment I sat down he gave me a glass of water. Moments later he asked me if I wanted a drink. Not, what I wanted to drink BUT, IF I wanted a drink. After I told him my drink he still provided me with a glass of water. Thanks Matt. That’s skillful thinking. Think about you patron before you think of yourself.

  11. This is becoming my favorite bar in the downtown 6th street area. The bartenders are amazing with out being pretentious. My favorite BT is Bradley. Cool guy, made us very comfortable and at the same time he wasn’t afraid to instruct a rude douchy customer next to us how to behave in public.
I will be back, over and over

  12. Had a cocktail each and I thought both were pretty good. Prices were decent and ambiance was really cool. Gotta love the secret bookcase entry. Bartenders were friendly and although we were in and out pretty quickly, it was a spot I’d return to.

  13. Located in a retired OG 1885 firehouse (maybe that’s how they came up with the name), FL is one of my personal fav downtown haunts. Everything about it is just…cool. See what I did there? Hardy-har-har. 😉

Hidden just beyond the bookcase in the lobby of the adjacent hostile, you walk into a dimly lit quasi-swanky, speakeasyish, hipsterish (without so many skinny jeans) space with cozy couch seating and a smallish bar that has stools so tall my 5’6″ self has to literally crawl up onto. Caution: the trip down post libations is even trickier.

FL has some great mixoligists. Lots of sig cocktails. Or, tell them what you like (vodka) and/or don’t like (overly sweet foo foo) and they will create a unique masterpiece with your name on it.

Very light bar snacks available (think nuts, etc.), live music sometimes, and a very diverse crowd – drifters off dirty 6th, visitors venturing from The Driskill across the street, young peeps who are bunking upstairs, & regulars.

Bonus, great boozy happy hour daily, open to 8pm, including weekends. Cheers to that!

  14. An amazing hostel for a great price and location! I’ve stayed at a few hostels and this one is a winner! It’s clean, the staff is helpful and it’s attached right to a speakeasy bar which is always a plus! They also give you a free beer during check in which is the “national” beer of Austin (oh Texas lol). It’s a great way to meet others and there are random activities throughout the weekend and weekdays for solo travelers.

If you can afford the deluxe room I would highly recommend it because it’s worth a few extra bucks. The checkin and checkout process is painless. The kitchen area is in the 2nd floor and they give free breakfast from 7-11. You’re close to sixth street and most places are walkable. Highly recommend a stay here!

  15. Love this bar!

My husband and I have been going to the Firehouse Lounge since we moved to Austin. We recently went there for the after party after our wedding.

    Ambiance-
This is a “secret” bar accross the street from the Driskill. You enter through the bookcase by the Hostel check in. It is a fairly small room with different levels and a bar. It also has a small stage for live music (mostly solo acts or DJs). It is good for late night or when it is 100 degrees outside. It is very dark with no windows, and definitely has the speakeasy feel.

    Drinks & food-
The bartenders are mixologists. And they make amazing cocktails. The specials are always very good. This is also a good place to go and let them know what you like, and they will whip something delicious up. That is one of my favorite things to do here. They also have a great cheese plate and other small bites.

    Service-
The service can be slower, only because all the cocktails are craft cocktails. This is a nice bar, not a college bar, so I consider that a good thing. At the same time, it is not stuffy. After our wedding, the bartenders were VERY nice and fun! They made sure that everyone in our wedding party had a great time. It was the perfect place for us to go.

Overall, I love this place. I’d recommend it to anyone for a late night cocktail on an extra hot or cold night.

  16. Really cool bar located in the heart of downtown. I really enjoyed their nice ambiance and great drinks.

Enter by sliding a bookshelf. It’s crazy but fun, like going into a secret hiding spot.

I ordered some kind of gin drinks. I just explained to a bartender what I wanted and he mixed something up for me. Something citrusy with gin tasted so good.

Loved everything about this bar, hope to come back again at my next visit to Austin.

  17. Hipsterish, yes.
    Secret bookshelf entrance, yes.
    Fantastic cocktails, yes.

So We went here for a friends wedding reception, and it was mid afternoon on a Saturday. It was hot and muggy out, and we arrived a few minutes late. The guy at the hotel desk had a funny grin as I tried to figure out how to get in here, but that just made it seem even better.
it has that dark basement feel, but is surprisingly well lit. The bar counter top is very high, so watch out when you get off the stool, depending on how much you have enjoyed your drinks.
I appreciated the velvet pictures on the wall, it felt very “Austin” that one of them was of Willy.

Now this is a strange one, but I have to say, some of the funniest bathroom graffiti in the mens room. I would think its gone by now, but if its not, someone has a flair for the artistic side and turned the knots in the wood into pooping wildlife.

  18. In an area that is surround by nothing but touristy dirty bars Firehouse is a breath of fresh air. Firehouse is a cool joint to stop in and grab a few quick drinks. Its kind of fun walking through the bookshelf. If was traveling I’d totally want to stay at the hostel and as a bar customer meeting the guests and getting to know new people is always fun.

They do great classic cocktails, I didn’t find many of the drinks that inventive but they had all the typical classic stuff with new names. Service is a bit slow as they always seem to have one bartender trying to make classic cocktails for the entire bar. The drinks come out perfect so its hard to complain too much.

Firehouse is great everyone should check it out.

  19. Creative cocktails and super cool speak-easy atmosphere? Count me in! While exploring downtown Austin, Yelp directed me here. There’s also a hostel associated with the lounge as well. The interior here has a high bar, table seating, and black vinyl couches in the back and a stage in the corner for live music (of course). We were there on a Friday afternoon so were the only 2 in the place.

Our bartender was really friendly and talked to us about where we were from, why he chose Austin, and life in general. I wish we had more time to stay because these drinks were amazing and used all kinds of interesting ingredients.

I can only imagine how fun this place is when it’s a Friday or Saturday night! Definitely check it out if you can.
