A casual neighborhood gathering spot serving hot, handmade meals and ice cold beer for an eclectic mix of Austin business people, students, artists and musicians. The first Waterloo Ice House opened its doors on Congress Avenue in 1976. Not much has changed since our opening over 40 years ago.

This place is such a south Austin gem. Love it. Sometimes they don’t always follow through on the special requests, even if not busy (most recent example: no cheese in the tortilla soup), and one of the kid hosts seems comically confused by her job, but no big deal. Everyone is proactive and definitely friendly. Good service despite a few mistakes!

Update: Some of the food doesn’t seem to be as good as it used to be. Which is unfortunate, as the environment is great.

The catfish was extra crisp outside, super soft inside. Good sauce. Wife had the chicken fried chicken special. Pretty good but the catfish I will remember..

Great experience here! Food, atmosphere and service were awesome. Our waitress, Ashley, was very attentive and put in a food order early for our toddler as we waited for our party. Very kid friendly. Will come back!!

We came here for breakfast, and everything was absolutely wonderful! I ordered an omelet with hash browns and it was perfect: the hash browns were slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and not overcooked, which often happens in diners. The omelet was incredibly tender and delicious.

What impressed us even more was that we asked for decaf coffee, and they specially prepared it for us — such a thoughtful touch! The service was excellent: the staff was friendly and efficient, and the place was very clean.

This spot is clearly popular; it was quite busy in the morning, but that didn’t affect the speed or quality of the service. We left with full stomachs and great impressions. Thank you, we will definitely come back!

I love the Hippie Chop Salad, it’s one of the best Cobb-style salads in town. Good drinks, friendly service, and I’m very comfortable going there by myself.

I love going and getting the works a great burger minus the jalapenos (I don’t need any help in the spicy area lol) and sitting on the patio! The best thing about them is they get the gluten free idea something that a lot of places haven’t picked up on. Plus they have sweet potato fries as a choice for sides the only kind for potato( at least for me)!
I have to say I looooong for pancakes that are gluten free! I my actually dream about it on occasion…………….OMG they have them and not just one flavor…………..yum blueberry, banana brown sugar and cinnamon pecan. Need I say more?!
If you go ask for Shawn he is awesome. Let me say the managers are really special too!
We had a small issue and they swept it away immediately.

Great service, great burgers. Buns were delicious. Onion rings tasted hand battered. We’re definitely coming back! Good place for a drink/watch sports!
