A founding member of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan and one of hip-hop’s most revered artists, GZA–also known as The Genius–continues to show that few can match his lyricism and verbal mastery. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of his seminal solo album, Liquid Swords, GZA is hitting the road with Phunky Nomads, a powerhouse live backing band known for fusing classic hip-hop with raw musicianship.
Originally released in 1995, Liquid Swords is hailed as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever recorded–a cinematic blend of GZA’s vivid storytelling, philosophical depth, and RZA’s haunting, minimalist production. Three decades later, the record’s influence resonates across generations of artists and fans alike.
This anniversary tour brings Liquid Swords to life like never before, with GZA performing the album’s iconic tracks alongside Phunky Nomads, creating a dynamic fusion of hip-hop and live performance that bridges decades and genres. The result is a celebration not only of a landmark album but of GZA’s enduring legacy as one of rap’s true intellectual architects.
About GZA & Liquid Swords
GZA (a.k.a. “The Genius”) is a seminal voice in East Coast hip-hop, known for his intricate storytelling, philosophical leanings, and razor-sharp metaphors. As one of the original Wu-Tang Clan members, he helped pioneer a new standard in lyricism and depth.
Released November 7, 1995 on Geffen and produced largely by RZA, Liquid Swords is often hailed as a high watermark in the Wu-Tang solo catalog. The album’s production is moody and dense — built on sparse, haunting beats, haunting samples (including from Shogun Assassin), and sharp, disciplined bars.It features classic tracks like “Duel of the Iron Mic,” “Cold World,” and, of course, the title track “Liquid Swords.” Upon its release, Liquid Swords peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and over time has grown in esteem–today regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever.
In live settings, GZA and his band breathe new life into these songs. In recent performances, reviewers have noted how the Phunky Nomads transform Liquid Swords staples with jazz-inflected instrumentation and fresh arrangements, giving classics like “Duel of the Iron Mic” or “Cold World” a renewed urgency.
Meet Phunky Nomads
Phunky Nomads have served as GZA’s live band for years, combining virtuosic musicianship with soulful energy. The group blends hip-hop foundations with threads of funk, jazz, blues, and rock, giving GZA’s classic catalog a living, breathing backing.
Originally formed (circa 2010) to back GZA in concert contexts, Phunky Nomads have since carved their own reputation within the underground/indie scene, touring across the U.S. and beyond and collaborating with artists in hip-hop, jazz, and experimental fusion spaces.
